Windows XP Setup Instructions (PDF)

This will explain how to configure Windows XP to use the Georgia Tech LAWN. This does not cover wireless cards that rely upon vendor-specific configuration utilities. This does not cover the installation of the card itself, though typically this consists of nothing more than inserting the card and allowing Windows to do the rest.

LAWN Configuration for Windows XP

NOTE: You should be able to search for wireless connections and find GTwireless. If not, try these steps:

  1. Make sure you are not connected to the internet via a wired connection.
  2. Go to Start and click Control Panel.
  3. If you see a blue screen, click Switch to Classic View on the left.
  4. Double-click Network Connections
  5. Right-click on the Wireless Network Connection and choose Properties.
  6. Select the Wireless Networks tab.
NOTE: If you do not see the tab, you may have another wireless network manager running, or your wireless card is configured incorrectly. In the case of the former, either use your network manager, or run the Wireless Zero Configuration Service. In the case of the latter, uninstall your wireless network card from the Device Manager and reinstall it using the Add Hardware Wizard.
  7. Enter "GTwireless" in the Network name (SSID) field.
  8. For Network Authentication, choose "Open".
  9. For Data encryption, choose "WEP".
  10. Uncheck the box next to "The key is provided for me automatically."
  11. nter the encryption key (WEP) in the Network key field. If you do not have the WEP key, you may get from the LAWN SSID and WEP key webpage.
  12. Enter the (WEP) key again in the Confirm network key field.
  13. When you are done, it should look just like this the image to the right.
  14. Click OK then click OK again.
  15. From the list of visible wireless connections, move GTwireless to the top as displayed above. Ensure the rest of the settings are as displayed.
  16. Right Click Wireless Network Connection and select Disable.
  17. Right Click Wireless Network Connection and select Enable.
  18. After a few seconds, you should see a message in your system tray. Launch your favorite web browser. You should be redirected to the LAWN login page as below. Once you are logged in, you may use the network.

Still not connected to GTWireless on XP?
One thing that might be happening is that FASTPASS might be in the preferred network list above GTWireless. If this is the case, you will want to change that to have GTWireless as the preferred network above FASTPASS. Below is help on how to change that.

  1. Follow the previous steps 1) through 6)
  2. Select GT wireless and use the "Move Up" button to make it the first item in the list. Select OK.
  3. You should now see this as your new network settings. This prioritizes GTwireless over FASTPASS
