Email Aliases

Q: What is an email alias?

An email alias is a personalized electronic mail address that points to a destination address where someone usually reads their mail. Mail sent to the alias address will automatically forward to the destination address. Georgia Tech electronic mail aliases are created in the format alias@gatech.edu, where alias is self-assigned based upon availability. The terms "email alias" and "alias" are often used interchangeably.

Q: How many @gatech.edu email aliases can I have?

Everyone at Georgia Tech is allowed one personal @gatech.edu email alias. This email alias is not another email account, but instead an email address that will deliver email to one of your existing email addresses. If you are faculty or staff member, you may have other email aliases related to your employee account(s).

Q: How do I receive and send email using my email alias?

Incoming email addressed to your alias will be delivered to the destination address associated with the alias. You should continue to send email from the account(s) that you already use. The return address field displayed on your email messages can be configured to display your alias, depending on the email software you are using. Here are some menu path examples for setting your return address:

  • Eudora: Tools==>Options==>Sending Mail
  • Microsoft Outlook Express: Tools==>Accounts==>Mail==>Properties
  • Spectrum Webmail: Options==>Your Information==>Personal Information
  • Thunderbird: Tools==>Account==>E-mail Address

IMPORTANT NOTE: Faculty and staff should verify their departmental policy regarding email aliases prior to sending mail "From" alias@gatech.edu.

Q: How often can I change my email alias? You can change your email alias once a semester as long as 30 days have passed since your last change. This rule applies to everyone.

Q: How long can I keep my email alias?

You can keep your self-assigned @gatech.edu alias as long as you have a Georgia Tech email account.

Q: What email address will be displayed in the GT online directory?

Students with published email addresses who select an @gatech.edu email alias will have that address published in the Georgia Tech Directory. Faculty and staff will continue to have their first.last@department.gatech.edu address displayed unless departmental policy allows publication of @gatech.edu aliases and their IT support to change employees' published addresses.
