Passwords



  • Obtain
    For OIT-issued "GT Accounts": Students must appear in person at the Support Center on the ground floor of the Library or at the Information Services Desk in the Library and show a picture ID. The Support Center is open 8:00am - 6:00pm, Monday - Friday. The Information Services Desk is may be available outside of these hours. See their schedule for details.

    Faculty and Staff members may appear in person at the Support Center in the Resource Center on the ground floor of the Library and show picture ID, or they may have their CSR contact the OIT Support Center at (404) 894-7173. For on-line Registration, Student Access Menu, on-line Financial Aid system, etc: These typically require a gtID# and PIN. Contact the appropriate office (Registrar, Financial Aid, etc.) for information on accessing these systems. For other accounts: Contact the Computer Support Representative for your department, or other person designated by the CSR. The list of CSRs can be found at: http://www.oit.gatech.edu/help/departmental_support/csr_search.cfm When choosing a password, there are a few restrictions you should be aware of.


    • Passwords are case sensitive.
    • Your password cannot be the same as your username
    • Passwords must contain between 7 and 23 characters.
    • Your password must contain at least 1 character from 3 of the 4 classes of characters below:
      • Uppercase alphabetic (the letters of the alphabet): A-Z
      • Lowercase alphabetic: a-z
      • Numeric (digits): 0-9
      • Special (punctuation, etc.): !@#$%^, and others
    • Your new password cannot be one of your most recent 3 passwords

    Here are some password DOs and DON'Ts:

    DOs:
    • Something easy for you to remember.
    • Something obscure; a deliberately misspelled term or an odd character in an otherwise familiar term, such as phnybon instead of funnybone. Or use a combination of two or more unrelated words.
    • A phrase like "many colors" using only the consonants, e.g., mnYc0l0rz or a misspelled phrase, e.g., 2HotPeetzas or ItzAGurl.
    • An acronym for your favorite saying, or a song you like e.g., GykoR-66 (Get your kicks on Route 66) or L!isn! (Live! It's Saturday Night!).
    • An easily pronounced nonsense word, e.g., slaRooBey or krang-its.
    • Two or more words separated by a non-alphabetic, non-numeric, or punctuation character, e.g., mac2%beav or cat,bear#

    DON'Ts:
    • Do not write your password down.
    • Do not share your password with anyone. Not your secretary, not your parents... not even OIT.
    • Avoid using people's names (especially your own), your GT Account username, and any word that can be found in a dictionary.
    • Do not use your name in any form -- first, middle, last, maiden, spelled backwards, nickname or initials.
    • Do not use your userid, or your userid spelled backwards.
    • Do not use part of your userid or name.
    • Do not use any common name, e.g., Linda, Joe.
    • Do not use a password similar to your last password.
    • Do not use the name of a close relative, friend, or pet.
    • Do not use your phone or office number, address, birthday, or anniversary.
    • Do not use acronyms, geographical or product names, and technical terms.
    • Do not use any all-numeral passwords, e.g., your license-plate number, social-security number.
    • Do not use names from popular culture, e.g., spock, sleepy.
    • Do not use words that are either proceeded or followed by a digit, a punctuation mark, up arrow, or space.
    • Do not use words or phrases with all the vowels or whitespaces deleted.
    • Do not use any word that exactly matches a word in a dictionary, either forward, reversed, or pluralized -- or with some or all of the letters capitalized.
    • Do not use words or phrases that do not mix upper and lower case, or do not mix letters or numbers, or do not mix letters and punctuation.
    • Do not use words that match a dictionary word with any of the following translations:
      a -> 2, a -> 4, e -> 3, h -> 4, i -> 1, l -> 1, o -> 0, s -> $, s -> 5, z -> 5

  • Longevity
    It is recommended that you change your password every 30 days. You will be forced to change your password periodically. If you do not change your password when asked, it will expire and you will not be able to log in. Once a password expires, you will still be able to change it for 21 days. You may also be able to change your password beyond this time if you have previously set up hinted login at passport.gatech.edu.
    • Reset
    • Go to http://passport.gatech.edu/ If you have forgotten your password, the OIT Support Center can reset it for you. There are several ways to get your password reset.
      1. Appear in the Support Center with a photo ID.
      2. Send a fax to the Support Center, ATTN: CSC, with the following information:
        • A copy of a photo ID
        • Your gtID#
        • Your GT Account username
        • A phone number we can call in order to give you the new password
      3. Call the Support Center at 404-894-7173 to have your password reset over the phone.
      4. Have the CSR in your department or school contact the Support Center on your behalf. NOTE: No password will be sent via e-mail.
    • Sharing
      • Do not write your password down.
      • Do not share your password with anyone. Not your secretary, not your parents... not even OIT.
      • Avoid using people's names (especially your own), your GT Account username, and any word that can be found in a dictionary.
