Routers

Please Note that Wireless Routers are not permitted by OIT policy. If you do have a wireless router, disable the wireless feature of the router. This is NOT the same as disabling the SSID broadcast!

ResNet recommends the following routers:
Wired: Linksys BEFSR41, NETGEAR RP614
Wireless: Linksys WRT54G, WRT54GL

To take full advantage of the 1000Mbps connection offered by ResNet, the router needs to have both 1000Mbps LAN ports and a 1000Mbps WAN port. The following routers have these specifications:
Wireless: Linksys WRT330N, TrendNET TEW-633GR

Please DO NOT purchase a Belkin wireless router or any "compact" wireless routers such as the Linksys WRT54GC, as their wireless capabilities cannot be disabled and are therefore banned from use at Georgia Tech.

Registering a router with STAR^3T:

  1. Plug in router AC adapter to power socket.
  2. Verify computer is configured for DHCP. Turn off computer.
  3. If your router is not brand new, reset router by pressing RESET button for 5 seconds while the router is powered. You may need a paper clip or pencil tip to press the RESET button.
  4. Unplug router's power cable.
  5. Connect ethernet cable from WAN/INTERNET port on router to ethernet jack on wall.
  6. Plug router's power cable in. Verify that the Power light is on.
  7. Connect ethernet cable from computer ethernet port to a router port (1-4).
  8. Turn on computer. Verify Link/Act light is active for the port the computer is connected to.
  9. Once computer is up and running, open a web browser and navigate to http://start.gatech.edu. You should be directed to the START page which will allow you to register your router / computer for the network.
  10. Once you have completed the registration, wait 5-10 minutes, and power-cycle the router. Once the router is powered back up, you should have full network access. If you do not have access please call ResNet at (404) 894-0044.
  11. If you have a wireless router, ensure your wireless is disabled. Instructions for the following brands can be found below:
LINKSYS: Navigate to 192.168.1.1 and enter "admin" as the password, the username can be left blank. Once in the router menu, click on the Wireless Tab and in the drop down box labeled "Network" or "Wireless Network Mode" select "Disabled."

Notes:
It is recommended that you change your default password for the router. You can do this by opening a web-browser and navigating to the following page, depending on your router model:

BEFSR41: http://192.168.1.1 (User: admin, Password: admin)

RP614: http://192.168.0.1 (User: admin, Password: password)

This brings you to the router's Setup page. From here you will be able to change the default password for your router.

By default the router will use its own MAC address while connected to the network. Please do not clone the MAC of your computer. This has caused switch ports to stop functioning and results in downtime for the resident.
